For some years, I used to think about the Eurovision final as an important yearly celebration, an occasion to gather with friends and have fun. Whether at home or in a public place, we were looking forward to listening to what Europe and its friends had to offer in terms of music creation. We knew the majority of the songs would be nothing we would ever voluntarily listen to, but the idea of dancing, smiling, and keeping score was exciting.
This year, Eurovision joined the club of world competitions that do not care about human rights and that wouldn’t take a stand for what’s just. By allowing Israel’s representative to perform in the 2024 competition, by banning any display of support for the Palestinian cause, by offering so much protection to the Israeli artist, and at the same time by accepting the aggressive behavior of the police towards anyone who would even just seem to support Palestine, is incredibly painful and disgusting.
This year, I choose to stop watching or talking about Eurovision with my friends and family. This year, I choose to talk about the genocide that is going on in Gaza, about the hate that supporters of an aggressive Israel are allowed to display without any punishment, about how most of the countries in the world accept any zionist excuse to bomb towns and villages, to kill innocents, to destroy lives, and to abusively occupy Palestinian land.
Eurovision, by allowing the Israeli artist to perform during this year's edition and by hiding cowardly behind “neutrality” slogans, has covered itself in shame. In 2024 Eurovision is a stage covered in innocent blood!
