Today, more people than ever before are living in countries or regions different from where they were born – nearly 280 million individuals, which is about 3.6% of the world's population. (Source: UNHCR Global Trends). This number has surged from 79 million in 1960, presenting a growing challenge not only for the communities receiving the migrants but also for the migrants themselves.
But, can you imagine how would it be if nobody ever ventured beyond their birthplace? How would the world look if people didn't travel and establish new homes elsewhere? Across history, migration has not only shaped our lives in profound ways but also left tangible imprints on various aspects of society. People on the move enrich the social dynamics of our communities, influence the clothes we wear and the food we eat, and contribute to the vibrant life of our cities. Furthermore, migration has sparked the creation of countless artworks and inspired numerous inventions.
Understanding migration
Understanding migration is extremely important because it reveals some really deep historical roots. Thanks to some innovative research methods, experts have uncovered ancient and hidden migrations that have shaped how our world looks today. If you dig back far enough, you'll find that almost all of us have immigrant ancestors, even though we often hear stories about our unique ethnic or national backgrounds.
Refugees
What's even more important is taking care of the approximately 109 million people who were forcibly displaced worldwide in 2022 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations. They urgently need things like food, medicine, and a safe place to stay. But in the long run, what will really help them build new lives is taking care of their mental health and creating contexts in which the refugees and asylum seekers will be able to have a decent life and to achieve their goals. Whether these migrants succeed or not depends partly on whether the communities they move to welcome them or turn them away.
